Confidentiality
We Are Serious About Confidentiality and Security
Back in August of 1996 the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Public Law 104-191, was enacted to help protect persons private records and personal information. If you visit the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services website, www.hhs.gov, you can download the 25 page summary of this act.
The confidentiality of our Protected Health Information(PHI) has become a priority for many businesses and by extension many of us as individuals. The principles of protecting peoples personal information absolutely extends to all companies that work with data recovery and backup.
Why so much concern?
Hackers, malware, viruses, and ransom-ware have become common terms in the field of technology. The Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is required to report all breaches that affect more than 500 persons per incident. (Section 13402(e)(4) of the HITECH ACT) Just in the first 4 months of 2017 there have been over 100 incidents that meet this criterion: hacking, theft, and unauthorized access or disposal account for the majority of reported incidents. This alarming data, of course, does not account for the thousands of individual computer users that have their data hacked, stolen or ransomed.
Someone who knowingly or intentionally discloses this personal information can receive fines of thousands of dollars and even prison time. Protecting the data and files of individuals is serious business.
For individuals, most recorded estimates say that 30% of all U.S. computers are infected with malware. Those same estimates explain that across the globe, 30% is the average amount of computers that have been violated with this vicious software.
Malware, viruses, and ransom-ware can all be used to either steal or damage your personal files.
